One of the most important events during past orientation week for the 30 freshmen who were lately recruited by Fan Gongxiu Honors College is the welcome reception from the dean and upper-level fellows for a formal introduction to the university community to offer students insights into academic culture and the meaning of a university education. School’s out for the summer! There is no greater joy for a student than to go on the June to September summer vacation. After a whole year of studying, the summer break comes like a breath of fresh air, giving the students time to relax and recharge themselves.     For this summer, 22 second-year students in the College immersed themselves in the summer program at University of Maryland by designing Lego EV3 robots, learning professional software SolidWorks, visiting high-tech laboratory, and simply soaking in diverse courses.     The focus of the visit is a three-week “Bridge 3D Design and Printing” project, followed by team product competitions and commercial bidding simulations. Fan Gongxiu Honors College Capstone Convocation, recognized also as the graduation thesis defense, was held in the 4th Lecture Hall, the primary locus for their four year academic life. The Capstone project at Fan Gongxiu Honors College is a research thesis or creative project in the major program students have selected to graduate with. It starts from the Spring Semester of their junior year and lasts till the end of their senior year right before graduation. It is their third and the most comprehensive project in the past four years that demonstrates their integration of achieving student outcomes developed, both theoretically and practically, from the undergraduate programs. In the evening of December 5th, 30 freshmen in Fan Gongxiu Honors College held a reading and sharing panel discussion in Room 610 of the 4th Lecture Hall. From October, students began their reading activities under the instruction as described by the One Book One Community Project, which is intended to build an intellectual and social rapport among honors students and community members through the collective experience of reading, thinking and discussing challenging ideas and themes that raise important social issues. They were required to read the book Silent Spring written by Rachel Carson and then share their opinions with the whole class.
